Democritus, fragment 198 (from Stobaeus 3.4.72, tr. Kathleen Freeman):
The animal needing something knows how much it needs, the man does not.

τὸ χρῇζον οἶδεν, ὁκόσον χρῄζει, ὁ δὲ χρῄζων οὐ γινώσκει.
